How TheTailReport reviews pet tech
Every product is scored 0–10 across five weighted criteria. Tested in real homes with real pets for at least 30 days. Subscription pricing is always analyzed separately from upfront cost.
The five-criteria scoring rubric
Subscription pricing is analyzed separately from upfront cost. A $200 GPS collar with a $9/month required subscription has a 24-month cost of $416, not $200 — and we disclose this in every review.
What our sources are
- Vendor documentation, manufacturer specs (verified against hands-on use)
- Hands-on testing with real pets in real households for 30+ days minimum
- r/cats, r/dogs, r/PetTech threads for context and failure-mode reports
- Veterinary professional networks for clinical-adjacent input
- Industry coverage: Pet Industry News, Pet Age, Veterinary Practice News
What we test hands-on
Every product we recommend has been used by a real pet in a real household for at least 30 days. For products we cannot test hands-on (rare — usually new releases), we synthesize from documentation and verified user reports, and we say so explicitly inside the article.
How we handle anonymized expert input
For pillar articles requiring veterinary expertise (health implications, behavioral assessments, clinical use cases), we interview real veterinarians and RVTs and quote them anonymously with their consent. Format: "An RVT with 9 years of emergency veterinary experience in the SF Bay Area told us...". We verify credentials before quoting.
Affiliate relationships
TheTailReport participates in affiliate programs (Amazon Associates, vendor-direct). We disclose at the top of every article that contains affiliate links.
Independence policy:
- Commission rates have no bearing on scoring or ranking.
- Ties are broken on the lower commission — bias against pay-to-play.
- We do not accept paid sponsorships or vendor-paid placements.
- Vendors do not review articles before publication.
Update cadence
- Pricing changes monitored monthly (subscription pricing especially).
- Major firmware updates trigger article review within 30 days.
- Recall or safety notices trigger updates within 48 hours.
